What Are Coach Houses?
Coach Houses, also termed Secondary Dwelling Units, are a form of infill housing on existing residential lots. In other words, Coach Houses are stand-alone units with facilities (kitchen, washroom) that are located on the rear or side yard of an existing residential house. Other names for Coach houses include Granny Flats, Backyard Homes, Garden Suites and Guest Houses. These houses can be used for multiple purposes such as an apartment for family members; as a source of additional income; for a 'Man Cave' or 'She Shed'; or even simply a garage.
Following amendments in the Province's Strong Communities Through Affordable Housing Act, 2011, The City of Ottawa recently approved secondary dwelling units on existing detached, semi-detached and townhouse dwelling units. With the new zoning by law amendments, you may be eligible to construct a Coach House on your property.
